I love Memorial Day weekend for several reasons.
1. It marks the beginning of the end of the school year. Once you get to Memorial Day, the end is in sight. Even if there is a boatload of work to do to close things out.
2. Sally was born right after Memorial Day.
3. We bought our house over Memorial Day weekend 24 years ago.
4. Best of all, I met Jack at a Memorial Day party 29 years ago. My brother, Tom, and Jack were friends from time spent as co-workers at IBM and another co-worker had an annual Memorial Day party. The host always encouraged his friends to bring girls to the party to even out the ratio and so Tom brought me. I liked Jack from the moment we first met. I didn't hold it against him that it took him almost 4 weeks to call me (I had to have Tom give Jack a message for me). I will never forget the first time he called me...it was a hot Monday night and I was working on lesson plans for summer school the next day. The famous line from that phone call was from me. Jack asked if I wanted to go out the following weekend and after I said yes, he asked which night was better for me. "I'm really flexible!!!" I think I might have sounded a bit desperate, not wanting to let a live one get away! We did go out that following weekend, July 3, and the rest, as they say, is history.
I wouldn't want to forget to mention that I am thankful for all those who died for our freedom and for our country. I do understand that is what Memorial Day is all about.
